INDIANAPOLIS (CP) - Paul Tracy has been fined and placed on probation by the Champ Car World Series for his part in a shoving match with Alex Tagliani in Sunday's race in San Jose.

Tracy, from Toronto, will also lose seven points in the drivers' standings and his probationary period will be for the next three races. Tagliani, from Lachenaie, Que., has also been fined an undisclosed amount.

After sliding into a runoff area on lap 52, Tracy drove back onto the track right in front of Tagliani and both crashed out of the race. The two drivers came to blows when they got out of their cars.

Tracy later apologized and the two patched up their relationship, but Champ Car did not let the incident pass without disciplining both Wednesday.

Tracy drops from fifth to eighth in the Champ Car drivers standings with the loss of seven points. The points and probation were for violating Champ Car's rules on taking an unjustifiable risk during a race.

The fines to both drivers were physical contact and unsportsmanlike behaviour.

When the drivers emerged from the cars, Tagliani grabbed Tracy's uniform at the chest with both hands and appeared to yell at Tracy, who was carrying his helmet.

Tagliani turned away and walked several steps before again turning to confront Tracy.

They pushed each other and wild punches were thrown before bystanders pulled them apart and Tagliani stalked off.

The next race is the Grand Prix of Denver on Aug. 13.
